Save the World From Climate Catastrophe

The BBC report that the IPCC – the UN body for assessing the science related climate change, state the world is completely off track, heading towards a rise of 3°C.

The 33-page summary for Policymakers took three years of research and outlines some clear key messages.

“The first is that limiting warming to 1.5°C brings a lot of benefits compared with limiting it to 2 degrees. It really reduces the impacts of climate change in very important ways,” said Prof Jim Skea, who is a co-chair of the IPCC.

“The second is the unprecedented nature of the changes that are required if we are to limit warming to 1.5°C – changes to energy systems, changes to the way we manage land, changes to the way we move around with transportation.”

This new study says that going past 1.5°C is dicing with the planet’s liveability and this could be exceeded in just 12 years.

We can stay below the 1.5°C “guard rail” but it would take urgent, large scale changes from government and individuals as well as investments of around 2.5% of global GDP annually for two decades.

Even with those, we would still need machines, trees and plants to capture carbon from the air that we can then store deep underground.

As individuals, most of us don’t have the power (or money) to make huge impacts on global warming, but we can all make small changes that add up, starting with the three R’s.

Reduce – cut down the amount of waste you create
