Road Safety Week 2018

This week is Road Safety Week, the UK’s biggest road safety event, annually coordinated by the road safety charity, Brake.

This year’s theme is Bike Smart, cyclists and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK, with more than 100 riders injured every day.

Here at Simply Waste Solutions we, like all companies that operate vehicles, want every road user to be safe and go about their day as they’d planned. Injuring someone or worse is one of the most fearful things to anyone behind the wheel.

Safety is important, that’s why we go far beyond the legal requirements to ensure that everyone driving or cycling around one of our trucks is safe.

On our trucks we have:

  • Recording cameras that cover every angle of the truck and its surroundings
  • Cyclear – a cycling and pedestrian alert system that has an illuminated sign and speaker to alert cyclists and vulnerable road users when our vehicle is turning left as well as alerting the driver when a cyclist or pedestrian is approaching
  • Lane departure warning systems
  • Automatic emergency braking systems
  • Full telematic recording software that records the speed, braking and GPS location. This is useful in many ways, it allows us to check how our drivers are behaving on the road and invest in further training if necessary.

Before our drivers are even allowed out in one of our trucks, they have their licence checked and undergo comprehensive in-house tests and training that must be passed before they can drive for us.

We also have regular ‘house-keeping’ assessments just to check our drivers are driving to high standards that ensure accidents are kept to a minimum.

We appreciate that accidents can happen and that is why Road Safety Week is so important, it highlights the need for awareness on the road and that safety should always come first.
